修学旅行の宿で教員らが次々に倒れた。２日夕、山口県美祢市秋芳町のホテルで起きた一酸化炭素（ＣＯ）中毒とみられる事故。救急車が激しく出入りし、救急隊員の「酸素！　酸素！」との叫び声が響いた。子どもたちは避難先のホテルで不安な表情を浮かべた。

「大変なことになった。助けてくれ！」。現場となった山口秋芳プラザホテルの従業員が、向かいのホテルに駆け込んできた。

そのホテルから美祢市秋芳洞観光センターに「プラザホテルですごいことになっている」との電話連絡が入ったのは午後６時過ぎ。センターの職員は「一気に７人が倒れたと聞いた」と語る。

大阪府高槻市教委にも、間もなく現場の校長から一報が入った。

市教委などによると、午後６時からの夕食前、児童の健康管理のために同行していた女性看護師が荷物を置きに３階の部屋に入ったとたん倒れ、助けに来た教員３人も倒れた。卒業アルバム用の写真を撮影するため同行していたカメラマン１人は近くの部屋で倒れて、いずれも病院に搬送された。駆け付けた救急隊員も次々に倒れたという。

美祢署によると、消防とのやりとりの中で「ガスのにおいがしている。中に入れない。酸素ボンベが必要だ」などの話が出たという。

修学旅行を手配した大阪市の旅行会社「ニュートラベルサービス」には、添乗員から携帯電話で連絡があったが、ろれつが回らない状態だった。同社の担当者は「安否の確認をするだけで精いっぱい」と語った。

山口市の山口赤十字病院には、のどの痛みなどを訴えた小学生らが搬送された。診察した医師によると、みな意識ははっきりしているが、経過観察のため入院した。１階ロビーで数人の医師や看護師が小学生の血液を採って検査したが、血中濃度は平常値を示していた。

子どもたちは向かいのホテルに避難し、いったん入浴。その後、ロビーに集められ、教諭から「具合の悪い人はいませんか？」と声をかけられると、数人がのどの痛みなどを訴えていたという。

現場のホテルは周囲に規制線が張られ、立ち入りできなくなった。子どもたちは、口々に「先生が倒れたみたい。病院に運ばれたの？」などと話し合っていた。

高槻市教委の職員が現地入りし、３日午前０時過ぎに児童と面会。職員によると、児童らは「大丈夫」「寝られへん」などと話し、テレビを見るなどしてリラックスした様子だったという。
